Hello again! It’s Emmanuel Corels from Emmanuel Corels Creatives. Today we’re tackling an essential part of setting up your wireless network—wireless security. In this guide, we’ll walk through creating and applying a wireless security profile on your MikroTik router, ensuring that your network stays safe from unauthorized access.

Why Wireless Security Matters

Securing your Wi-Fi isn’t just about keeping prying eyes away—it protects your data, prevents unauthorized usage, and keeps malicious actors at bay. A strong security profile makes sure that only those with the correct credentials can access your network while using modern encryption standards to guard your traffic.

Understanding Wireless Security Modes

Before we dive into configuration, here’s a quick overview of the common wireless security modes:

  • WEP: An outdated, easily cracked protocol. Do not use it.
  • WPA-PSK: More secure than WEP, but still considered vulnerable.
  • WPA2-PSK: The current standard for home and small office networks. It uses stronger encryption (AES) and is widely supported.
  • WPA3: The latest standard with enhanced security, though not yet universally supported on all devices or older MikroTik models.

For most users, WPA2-PSK is the best balance between security and compatibility.

Step 1: Accessing Wireless Security Profiles

  1. Open WinBox and connect to your MikroTik device.
  2. Navigate to Wireless → Security Profiles. This is where you’ll create and manage the settings that protect your wireless network.

Step 2: Creating a New Security Profile

  1. In the Security Profiles window, click the “+” button to add a new profile.
  2. Name the profile something descriptive like WPA2-Home.
  3. Authentication Types: Check only wpa2-psk (avoid mixing with WPA or WEP).
  4. Encryption: Select aes ccm. This is the recommended encryption for WPA2-PSK.
  5. WPA2 Pre-Shared Key: Enter a strong passphrase. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. For example: MikroTikSecure!2025
  6. You can leave other options at their defaults unless you have specific needs.
  7. Click OK to save the new profile.

Step 3: Applying the Security Profile to Your Wireless Interface

  1. Still in WinBox, go to Wireless and open your wireless interface (e.g., wlan1).
  2. In the interface settings, find the Wireless tab.
  3. Locate the Security Profile drop-down menu and select the newly created profile (WPA2-Home).
  4. Ensure the Mode is set to ap bridge (for access point functionality).
  5. Optionally, set the SSID to something identifiable, like MyHomeWiFi.
  6. Click OK to apply the changes.

Now your wireless interface is secured using WPA2-PSK with AES encryption.

Step 4: Testing Your Wireless Security

  1. On a Wi-Fi–enabled device (like a smartphone or laptop), search for your SSID (e.g., MyHomeWiFi).
  2. Connect to the network using the passphrase you set.
  3. Verify that you can browse the internet or access network resources.
  4. If you experience connection issues, double-check that the SSID, passphrase, and security mode match between the router and the connecting device.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Incorrect Passphrase: Ensure you type the passphrase exactly as set in your security profile. Even small mistakes can prevent connection.
  • Device Compatibility: Most modern devices support WPA2-PSK. If an older device can’t connect, it might not support this mode—consider an upgrade.
  • Interference: If multiple networks are using the same channel or overlapping frequencies, try changing the wireless channel in your interface settings.
  • Profile Conflicts: Ensure that no other security profiles with conflicting settings are applied to the same interface.

Final Thoughts

Securing your wireless network with a proper security profile is crucial for protecting your data and maintaining a safe environment. By setting up a dedicated WPA2-PSK profile and applying it to your wireless interface, you’re taking an important step toward a secure network.

Keep experimenting and refining your settings as you get more comfortable with MikroTik. If you have questions or run into any issues, feel free to reach out. Stay safe and enjoy your secure wireless network!
